March 28th/29th Chepstow to Cheddar and return.

Weekend Cancelled - possible 1 day alternative ride from Severn beach to be confirmed

1 night in Cheddar YHA (Unsupported - Panniers required)

Contact: Juls Sims

Distance: 90 miles in total – approx. 45 miles per day, profile can be seen in the attached GPX files. The first day is relatively flat, the second day not so flat as you have the Gorge to get through ;)

Start/end: Chepstow Station: Start Saturday 28th March:9:15am.. End: Sunday 29th March:3pm – there is a free car park next to station, plus a coffee shop and a loo.

Accommodation: Cheddar YHA, It's not a bad standard YHA, I will coordinate the YHA accommodation but you're more than welcome to book alternative accommodation if you want to. A two course meal is veg/meat option £10, they are good size meals plus you can buy reasonably priced beer/wine to go with it. If you bring your own breakfast accommodation is only about £15 pp. Although breakfast can be ordered. Toiletries can be bought and towels can be hired.

Food: Saturday – Black Horse in Clapton-in-Gordano – need to order in advance, Sunday – Coffee #1 in Bristol, both stops are about 20 miles into the ride. The file is attached for both days: there are a few incorrect bits but they are obvious to spot and edit.

Overview of ride:

Day 1: GPX Download HERE The first day involves following several Sustrans cycle routes to take us to Cheddar. After leaving the station we cross the Severn Bridge, always a treat… the first of the two wonderful river bridges crossed today. Cycling through small lanes and along cycle paths we cross the Avonmouth bridge – cycling alongside the M5 traffic which is a little bit special. Then onwards using small lanes towards the lunch stop at a lovely friendly pub called the Black Horse in the unusually named village of Clapton-on-Gordano. Heading toward Clevedon we turn off onto the disused Strawberry line railway, a lovely cycle path that takes us all the way to Cheddar. Hoping as we are leaving earlish we can get to Cheddar early enough to be able to take a walk up to the Gorge, it’s about a 15 mins walk from the YHA.

Day 2: GPX Download HERE We leave early to get through the Cheddar Gorge before traffic starts to build up, 8:30am. About three quarters of a mile and you are into the climb of the day, there are 400 yards of tough climbing (especially with panniers) you can always get off and walk, otherwise it’s just a steady slog through the gorge which is pretty special, that time in the morning you will get to see the Cheddar Gorge goats that remind me of the Chamois in the alps. The next beautiful sight on route are the Chew Magna Lakes, which we circle on the way to Bristol. Picking our way through Bristol on Sustrans routes we bypass almost all main roads to take us out by Clifton Suspension Bridge (we can decide if people want to go and have a look or just want to get on)… more quiet lanes and over the Severn Bridge and back to Chepstow.

July 17th/19th Porlock Cycling - BBQ - Walking

This is very much a social weekend so it's also open to non cycling partners.

Roger and Di have been hosting our almost annual BBQ's for what must have been at least 20 years. (I'm sure I'll be corrected by someone). An I do hope I'm not tempting fate when I mention that in all this time, we have never failed to eat outdoors.

This is the weekend itinerary:

Fri 17th: Arrive anytime to explore the lovely village of Porlock, or join us for a small ride in the afternoon. Evening: Meet up for a meal in a local hostelry. Venue and times to be confirmed

Sat 18th: Full day ride led by our local guide Alan Jones. Visit the quaint villages and tea rooms with splendid views from the top of Porlock Hill. Evening BBQ at Roger and Di's house.  Bring along a bottle with a small contribution towards the BBQ (amount to be advised) along with their address and directions.

Sun 19th: Interesting local knowledge morning walk led by our hosts Roger and Di and then all back to their house to finish off any leftovers from the night before. Depart at your leisure or meet up in the evening for any stragglers staying until Monday. I've booked the Porlock caravan park site from the Friday to Monday

There is also another campsite nearby. Plus hotels and B&B's in the centre of the village. NB this is the first weekend of the school holidays, so probably the sooner you book the better. see https://www.porlock.co.uk/

Please let me know if you'll be joining us on this wonderful weekend.
